OUR STORY

The CSDD is a long established dance school – a family concern spanning over 50 years.  The school was started in 1963 by Pat Shannon, a former Tiller girl at the London Palladium and Blackpool Circusette, with 3 Royal Command Performances to her name.

Over the years classes increased in size and variety – starting with ballet and tap and then acrobatic & modern classes.  The school built up a strong local reputation for a friendly, family style run school with an emphasis on fun and enjoyment.  As this reputation spread, the school was invited to take part in pantomimes, festivals and other local events. Pupils of all ages were encouraged to take part thus gaining valuable performance experience and, equally importantly, having fun.

Senior pupils danced in cabaret both in and around London and all pupils also regularly danced in shows supporting various cancer charities.  The relaxed and fun atmosphere encouraged parents to want to take part and adult tap classes and shows then formed part of the annual school programme.

The school was formally taken over by Claire Cain, Pat’s daughter.  Claire, a professional dancer in her own right, with a strong performance and teaching background, now continues the family business. To a standard programme of ballet, tap, acrobatic and modern she has added jazz, street jazz, lyrical, contemporary and musical theatre classes so that pupils can obtain an all round training.

Over the years Claire introduced Jazz, Contemporary, Lyrical, Musical Theatre and Commercial Street on top of the standard programme of Classical Ballet, Tap, Acrobatic and Modern.

The school caters for all tastes and abilities and, although close attention is paid to technique, Claire continues to stress her Mum’s ethos that dance is to be enjoyed – whatever your ability.  And everyone has an opportunity to do what they excel in – performance in shows and medal / grade examinations (both I.S.T.D. & M.A.S.D.)

Most recently we have performed at Langley Park Centre for the Performing Arts, West Wickham Village Day, and Mardi Gras at Her Majestys Theatre in London.
